Concrete In Australia : December 2013
Concrete in Australia Vol 39 No 4 23 prestress with simple installation, in bundlesof1,3,4,5and7x15mmPC strands. The CCL anchors were hidden behind stepped end-blocks that blend organically into the beautiful fern-like fans where the shell ribs meet their supports – testimony to Utzon’s design. Also in 1962, Reid built his new home, Mirrabooka, at Castle Hill, a Frank Lloyd Wright-styled house inspired by the Hitchcock film North by Northwest. Reid contacted Hitchcock who arranged to send Reid the set designs on which Reid’s architect Bruce Rickard based the house. It featured polished concrete floors and one of the first post-tensioned cantilevered residential floor slabs in Australia, designed by Miller Millston and Ferris. Spying the exposed end connections, Hornibrook general manager Corbett Gore famously remarked: “Grout those cables boy!” He did. Mirrabooka was recently registered by the National Trust of Australia. Reid began the local manufacture of barrels and wedges, and jacks and pumps to meet the growing demand fuelled by the pre-stressing and post-tensioning of a large number of building and bridge projects including Silverwater Bridge, Alfords Point, Tasman, Roseville, Taren Point, Huntleys Point Overpass, Cahill Expressway tunnel and King Street Bridge restoration. PSC and CCL merged their Australian interests in 1965. Reid was appointed sales director, and during a prestressing conference in September he brought together all of the prestressing suppliers at a barbecue held in his home, including Morro Shibasaki and Lenny Emra (Sumitomo), Bob Dobbie (Macalloy), Joseph Koch (BBRV), Stan Scott, Barry Starkey, Neil Cavanagh and Pat Kilkenny (PSC). These competitors had never met together and this barbecue became the first informal meeting of the group of pre-stressers that was folded into the Institute when it was established in 1970. By 1967, strand prestressing was showing dominance, aided by VSL with a new strand system released in 1966 and energetically marketed by Graeme Reid with his wife at the Westgate Bridge opening ceremony. 50th Anniversary ESTABLISHED IN AUSTRALIA IN 1975 UNDER THE STEWARDSHIP OF JOHN REID. 1975: Smith Street Parramatta – Australia’s First Reinforced Earth Wall 2013: M2 Motorway Sydney WWW.RECO.COM.AU WORLDWIDE SINCE 1963 20-25 - Cover.indd 23 20-25 - Cover.indd 23 25/11/13 2:41 PM 25/11/13 2:41 PM
