Concrete in Australia VolVol 39 No 3 17 of precast concrete in bridges and related structures, including both historical and recent examples. Hilton looked at developments in integral bridges, including advantages of the system, limitations, design procedures and practical detailing and construction requirements. A er lunch, Jenkins spoke on substructures, abutments and buried structures, including the principles of design for soil-structure interaction, followed by an overview of recent international developments in concrete arch structures. Morris then presented his view of the designer s responsibility for structural safety, arguing strongly that this was not "somebody else s business", but a design responsibility which must be fully considered from the preliminary design stage. is was followed by Jenkins looking at the e ect of creep and shrinkage and steam curing, and how a careful analysis of these e ects could explain apparently anomalous behaviour of some pre- tensioned bridge girders. He moved on to provide a summary of recent research and publications from Professor Zdeněk Bažant suggesting that long term creep e ects may be much more signi cant than current codes would suggest, particularly in creep sensitive structures such as segmental cantilever bridges. e nal sessions were provided by Morris looking at techniques for modifying existing bridges, including strengthening for increased loads or increased impact e ects, widening, lengthening, maintenance and repair. Hilton then nished o the day looking at recent developments in computer modelling and materials, including applications of corrosion resistant steels, alternatives to steel reinforcement, self-levelling concrete, and ultra-high strength concrete. Attendees at the seminars will shortly receive extended notes on the presentations in electronic format, consisting of the PowerPoint presentations, an overview of the contents, a review of questions and discussion on each topic, detailed reference lists, and copies of related papers from the Institute s biennial conferences.
