16 Concrete in Australia Vol 39 No 3 NEWS Bridge design -- beyond the basics recap e second of the Concrete Institute s national full day seminar series focused on the process of bridge design, beyond the basics of following code requirements and standard details. e seminars were presented in Sydney, Brisbane, Perth, Melbourne and, in a rst for these series, Launceston. e presenters were three leading bridge design engineers, all actively working on the design of new bridges and associated structures, improvement and remediation of existing structures, and the preparation of standards for bridge design. ey shared their knowledge and experience in optimising bridge design for economy, quality and safety in a range of di erent structures and situations: • John Hilton is a technical director at Aurecon, and Aurecon s services and development leader for bridges. Hilton chairs the Standards Australia Sub-Committees BD090/05 for Part 5 (Concrete) and BD090/08 for Part 8 (Rehabilitation and Strengthening) for the next revision of the Australian Bridge Design Code, AS 5100. • Doug Jenkins now manages his own business, specialising in the design of bridges and associated structures. He has 40-years of experience in the design of bridges, including major projects both in Australia and many overseas countries, including UK, Middle East, Turkey, Japan and Malaysia. Jenkins is currently vice- president of the Concrete Institute, and was recently con rmed as the next president, taking over this role at the Concrete 2013 Conference in October. • Dr David Morris has varied and practical bridge engineering experience in the UK and since 2003 in Australia with GHD and Arup. In 2012 Morris started his own consulting practice in Melbourne. He is active in the profession as a Fellow of the Institution of Structural Engineers, and also serves on the council, and as a trustee and board member. He was recently elected to the Concrete Institute National Council, and will take up his position in this role in October. e seminars opened with Hilton speaking on new developments in concrete bridge design, including a comprehensive overview of changes proposed to the Bridge Design Code, AS 5100. is was followed by Jenkins on the use of computer analysis to provide a better understanding of structural behaviour, as opposed to the use of automated analysis so ware to provide quick solutions without a full understanding of the mechanisms involved.
