16 Concrete in Australia Vol 39 No 2 CONCRETE 2013 Keynote speakers Dr Andy Davids, Hyder Consulting, Shanghai Davids is a director of the global consulting engineering practice Hyder Consulting and serves on the Hyder Global professional board. He is the chief engineer of the Hyder "Super Tall design studio" and is responsible for most of the Super Tall projects undertaken by Hyder around the world. ese include the 355m tall Emirates Towers in Dubai, the 80-level Sun and Sky Towers in Abu Dhabi and the recently completed Central Bank Tower in Kuwait. Other works from the studio currently under construction include the 80-level CMA HQ Tower in Riyadh, the 80-level D1 on Dubai Creek and e Metropol in Istanbul, which will be the tallest building in Europe when completed. e studio holds complete design responsibility for the recently completed Burj Khalifa, which is the current tallest building in the world and is undertaking detailed design of J220, which will be the tallest building in China. Davids is an Australian engineer by training and holds a PhD in engineering and an adjunct chair in architecture at the University of Sydney. He also serves on several international code committees. He received the RW Chapman medal and Engineering Excellence Award from Engineers Australia for his work, and was recently cited amongst the 100 most in uential Australian engineers. Professor Mario Sassone, Department of Architecture and Design, Politecnico di Torino, Italy Sassone is a member of the 209 Committee of American Concrete Institute and of the International Association of Spatial and Shell Structures. He developed research mainly on the computational analysis of time dependent e ects behaviour in concrete and steel concrete composite structures, and on the structural and architectural optimisation of RC shells by means of arti cial intelligence techniques. His main interest is in bridging the gap between the architectural issues and the computational approaches to structural and physical problems. e members of his research group have been awarded the Hangai prize and one of them is presently lecturer at the University of Melbourne. Professor Surendra Shah, Walter P Murphy Professor of Civil Engineering (Emeritus), Centre for Advanced Cement Based Materials, Northwestern University, USA Shah is an Emeritus Walter P Murphy Professor of Civil Engineering at Northwestern University. He is the former director of the pioneering NSF Science and Technology Center for Advanced Cement-Based Materials. His current research interests include: fracture, bre reinforced composites, non-destructive evaluation, transport properties, processing, rheology, nanotechnology and use of solid waste materials. He has co-authored two books: Fiber-Reinforced Cement-Based Composites and Fracture Mechanics of Concrete. Shah has published more than 400 journal articles and edited more than 20 books. He has served as editor-in- chief of RILEM s journal Materials and Structures. Shah is a member of the National Academy of Engineering. He has received many awards, including the Swedish Concrete Award, ACI Anderson Award, RILEM Gold Medal, ASTM ompson Award, ASCE Charles Pankow Award and Engineering News Record s News Maker Award. He was named one the Most In uential People in the industry by Concrete Construction magazine. Besides teaching at Northwestern, Shah has taught at the University of Illinois at Chicago and served as a visiting professor at MIT, University of Sydney, Denmark Technical University, University of Singapore, Darmstadt Technical University, LCPC in Paris, Hong Kong Polytechnical University and L Aquilla University in Italy.
