4 Concrete in Australia Vol 39 No 1 NEWS Precast "wigwam" at the heart of innovative silo structure by Simon Moore Last year, Independent Cement and Lime (ICL) celebrated its 25th anniversary with the completion of a major upgrade of the Melbourne Cement Facility (MCF), located beside the lower reaches of the Yarra River at Port Melbourne. Recent works comprise transfer facilities spanning Lorimer Street, that deliver material to the bulk cement and bagging operations, but the heart of the upgrade program is an innovative cement silo completed earlier. Silos built for the storage of granular or powdered materials such as wheat, sand, our, cement and lime, traditionally feature a conical base that acts as a funnel. is delivers the stored material to a single take-o point and batching, transfer or weighing equipment. MCF s Silo C, also features a conical base at the bottom of the storage space, with one signi cant di erence. e cone is inverted and material delivery is achieved via a ring of take-o points at the base of the cone. Material is fed to the tanker loading installation via a series of radial air slides, all of which are accommodated in the space created under the cone. e area at the base of the silo features three, side- by-side loading bays which allow for the simultaneous loading of B-double cement tankers, a feature which was central to the design of the entire installation. MCF project manager Alan Dow said the silo has a capacity of 35,000t of cement, contained in a structure that is 55m high and 30m in diameter. Construction was undertaken for MCF by Decco and Structural Systems to a design developed by MPA Shedden. e concrete "wigwam" at the heart of the structure was erected using a series of precast concrete segments manufactured by Australian Precast. ese tapered in both thickness and width to accommodate the reduction in the cone s diameter from bottom to top, and increase in thickness from top to bottom to sustain both the weight of the structure and the stored material. e inverted cone con guration also pushes material away from the centre of the storage volume, so that more load is The new silo in Melbourne has a capacity of 35,000t of cement, contained in a structure that is 55m high and 30m in diameter.
