Concrete In Australia : September 2014
FROM THE CEO 4 Concrete in Australia Vol 40 No 3 Platinum Members David Millar Expanding horizons The mission of the Concrete Institute of Australia is to promote and develop excellence in concrete technology, application, design and construction throughout Australia. The concrete industry in Australia has been built upon a need to do this on its own as one of the most isolated countries in the world. However, a considerable amount of our expertise in this time has been imported from many parts of the globe. An example of this is the Snowy Mountains Scheme, which commenced 65 years ago this October. It was through the influx of migrant workers and concrete experts, combined with local engineers and contractors, that this milestone project in Australian construction history was such a success. Today, geographically Australia is still a long way from America, Europe, and even Asia, and we continue to develop excellence in concrete through local knowledge and expertise. However access to international resources is much easier in the modern world. So why not use it? The Concrete Institute of Australia has been developing relationships with a number of worldwide organisations and experts to bring the rest of the concrete world to us, and to promote what our concrete industry can bring to rest of the globe. How can this benefit our Members? Having international links in the concrete community gives the Institute many opportunities. We can attract world renowned experts in specific concrete fields to Australia for seminars and conferences, bring international conferences to our shores, and provide access to a number of publications, documents, learning tools and webinars from globally aligned groups. In fact, the Institute is doing this right now. Here’s a sample of what we are currently doing with overseas partners: In March 2014 we presented the National Seminar “Shear Design for Concrete Structures” with world acclaimed experts in this subject, Professors Michael Collins and Denis Mitchell. Our 2015 conference will be held in conjunction with RILEM week, bringing hundreds of overseas experts to our shores. We have been selected by the International Federation of Structural Concrete (fib) to host their 2018 Congress. The Institute is also the Australian National Member Group for fib. As part of our wider Strategic Plan, the Institute is furthering international ties with a number of groups, including fib and ACI, but also the New Zealand Concrete Society (NZCS), the Asian Concrete Federation (ACF), the UK Concrete Society, the Institute of Structural Engineers (UK), and the Institute of Civil Engineers (UK) to name but a few. Added to this we are strengthening relationships with individual experts who are willing and eager to come to Australia to present and teach our Members in their fields of expertise. As a Member of the Institute, these benefits are available to you, and we’ll continue to look at international opportunities to promote and develop excellence in concrete technology, application, design and construction throughout Australia.
